Things just get away.

June 29, 2009

June has been a whirlwind month for me and given that I have three trips planned for July (three!), life shows signs of slowing down. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving every minute of it, but it definitely takes its toll and make the quiet, peaceful moments like the one I’m enjoying right now that much more precious.

At the moment I’m sitting on my new back porch for the first time since I moved in at the beginning of June. We still don’t have any furniture out here to make the leisure time more comfortable, but things are slowly coming together. My life is finally coming back to a place where I can say I’m truly happy again since I’ve been back from South America. Maybe it’s the warmth and relaxation that comes with summer in the South. The lightening bugs are drifting through the air, and as the sun dips below the horizon the humidity and almost unbearable heat dissipates.

I was about to head to my room and sit down in my favorite place to be these days–my sewing machine–when the lush green and solitude of the back porch called to me. My mama taught me how to sew several weeks ago and gave me her old sewing machine which also belonged to my grandmother. I still haven’t finished the apron we started together, but I’m hoping to wrap it up by Wednesday so I can take it home with me and show it off. Along with my favorite new possession follows a passion for the crafts and I have at least five little projects in mind just itching to be started. I thought writing would be so much easier during the summer, but I’m finding that enjoying the peace of just living my life and soaking up every moment is what I’d rather be doing right now.

As I mentioned, I have three trips coming up in the next month. The first is back home to Birmingham, AL, for a long weekend and the 4th, the second is a short weekend trip to Savannah, GA, for one of my best friend’s wedding, and then immediately after I return to Atlanta from Savannah I will repack my bags and board a plane to Israel to spend three weeks satisfying my urge to travel internationally again and explore a different land and culture. There will no doubt be tons of photos, memories, and experiences, and I can’t wait to share them with y’all!

Dreams do come true.

May 27, 2009

I bought a plane ticket to Israel last week for July 13-August 4 and I could not be more excited.

In fact, it seems like all areas of my life are now looking up because I took initiative to make something I wanted to happen, happen. These past few days have been eventful ones here in Atlanta, and the next few weeks will prove to be even more so. I’m moving into a house with some girlfriends in a couple weeks and a new, positive living situation alone has taken a load off my shoulders and reminded me how nice it is to be in the company of amazing people.

A lot needs to get done this summer in preparation for bigger, life-changing events, but I’m loving every step of the way. Maybe some of this also has to do with my recent, very shameful addiction to Miley Cyrus’, “The Climb,” and the fact that it has been on repeat in my iPhone for several days now.

Spring

So it’s a week later than I expected, but I’m finally done with everything for Spring semester 2009. One more semester left before I graduate!

My dad is coming into town this weekend and I’m really looking forward to it. I still need to make dinner reservations for tomorrow night but it’s going to be so much fun to experience some of the best of what Atlanta has to offer! I can’t afford to do it, so I have to wait until the parents come to visit! ;)

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend, and now that I’m done with school I should be able to spend more time on things I enjoy, which includes this website. I have a long wishlist of things I want to do this summer and I’m determined to make these next few months some of the best yet! I’ll be back on Monday with updates and hopefully some good pictures. The weather forecast has been nothing but thunderstorms all week and throughout the weekend and next week, but the weatherman has been wrong pretty much all week so let’s hope that pattern continues!

Happy spring!

Feliz cumple a mi!

Mojito

After spending 5 months in Argentina being able to drink whenever I wanted to, the day finally came when I was legally able to drink here in one of only nine other countries in the world where the drinking age is over the age of 18… and all of those other countries are located in the Middle East with the exception of Japan and Iceland.

I don’t get to officially celebrate my birthday with friends until Thursday night because it is finals week and I have implemented a ban on any social activities until then, but I did buy myself a bottle of wine last night and will celebrate a little later this afternoon with delicious red velvet cupcake from the Atlanta Cupcake Factory.

L’chaim!

Vos no sos muy fashion!

March 19, 2009

One of the most… endearing things about Buenos Aires was the fashion. I think it took me the longest to get over and is one of the first things I remember about my beloved porteños (residents of Buenos Aires). So endearing that it prompted me to write a note about it on my Facebook tagging all my fellow former porteños (aka: study abroad partners in crime) that went a little something like this:

To my fellow former porteños,
In case any of you are terribly sad and missing our Buenos Aires querido, I bring you the joy of knowing that you can now have a little piece of Buenos Aires with you everyday. Remember the infamous diaper pants? What with the banded legs, the drop crotch, and the thigh areas that could hold many litres of medialunas? Well, I’ll have you know that you can now order them from our very own Urban Outfitters for the small price of US$58.00.

And if any of you actually purchase these or snuck a pair into your luggage without the rest of us knowing, you should know that the fashion police will find you. (Edited for this blog to add: Oh, look! They already have!)

And then the snarky comments ensued, my favorite of which was the following from Aislinn:

Well, I like to wear them when I carry my baby kangaroo. It makes for a larger pouch.

From the listings I’ve found, it seems these pants are known to the “fashion élites” as Harem pants, but, as I scoured the web for photos I came across numerous nicknames that are far more fitting such as poopy pants, shitcatchers, Hammer pant (a la M.C. Hammer), and my personal favorite, diaper pants. I thought my friend Liz was pure genius when she gave them this name as we were walking down the street–I’m sure on one of our many “all-day lunches” around the city. Apparently she wasn’t the first.

Finally, to top it all off, as I was doing a little image research for this post I came across this little gem:

I Dream of Genie Pants, take 2

If you do not check out the above link you are missing out on a lifetime of laughs. And as a little tribute to my former hometown and fashion that apparently is not limited solely to the calles and boliches of Buenos Aires, but rather has been touted all over the runways for spring collections in Paris, Milan, and now the US, I leave you with this photo montage of this major fashion don’t:

To wrap this post up, there was a question posed on Elle.com: How can I make spring’s slouchy trousers work well for me? My answer? Unless your name is Lawrence of Arabia or you live in Tunisia, you can’t. I rest my case.
